New Man RisingAs we drove to the jail we did as we often did, talked interview strategy. The approach which would provide the strongest opportunity to obtain a truthful statement. It was a no brainer. It mattered not what strategy we deployed, the man, one of 6 suspects involved in a robbery homicide would not talk.

JM, the man in the orange jumpsuit sitting across from us was hardened. Crime, drugs, and a sociopathic attitude made him a dangerous person. The perfect type to deploy our last minute plan of action, to speak the truth of Christ. We, Johnny Ringo and I, affirmed on our drive to the jail words The Holy Spirit spoke to us separately; it’s better to inspire salvation than to seek the confession of a dead man.

We spoke briefly of the case only to inform JM he was being charged with murder. After that Ringo and I shared the love and truth of Christ. A confession followed heartfelt words and tears. Our case against the others ever stronger.

Weeks later JM would plead guilty to counts of robbery and was sentenced to years in prison with the hopes of Christ before him. Not ever far from my mind, and often in prayers. A hope and a future left to faith.

Oh how we age. My wavy black hair a long past memory, and he, JM, not so intimidating. The report of violence brought us face to face again and when the investigation became settled he got teary eyed and said, you and Ringo saved my life. Now the truth of JM being a freed man rest solely on the grace of God. I asked about his fellowship and unsurprisingly learned there was none.

How can discouraging news bring joy? When receiving it through the lens of Jesus. JM needed a little extra encouragement and he got it. A referral to a church for truth and fellowship, and a promise to look in after him. And a request for you to join me in prayer for his salvation and donning of the new man. I’ve learned it’s better to share with others in worship and victory than it is to pray alone. A daily refitting of the new man. ~ LZ
